What a lower dimension sees

A square on a plane, visited by a sphere. Then the same visit, one dimension up — us, and something that does not fit in our space. The fourth direction is drawn the way height is drawn in an isometric picture: by borrowing a slant we do have.

What you see

From above the plane

Drag a body or the amber sphere. Drag empty table to turn it.

A Square's eyes

A one-dimensional retina

Edges become stretches of a line. Nearer is brighter.

Passing through

The circle grows as the sphere's middle arrives.

On their plane the radius is √(R² − h²). Height itself is invisible. They only notice a stranger changing size. Drag the amber sphere through a wall: from above that is nothing. On the retina, the wall still wins until the slice clears it.

Arrow keys scrub the extra direction. Space plays and pauses.

The same story, one dimension up

  • Their whole world

A plane. You are looking down on it.

  • What they see

A line of edges. Nearer is brighter.

  • A sphere, to them

A circle that swells, shrinks, and is gone.

  • A locked room, to you

Already open. Above is not a wall.

  • A hand from above

A disk that appears without using the door.

  • Turning Ell over

A flip through height. He returns mirrored.
